WMATA’s Board of Directors is meeting today to discuss a variety of issues, from the system’s on-time performance and standards to the possibility of reducing the number of cars on the proposed extension to Dulles International Airport. One recommendation of particular interest, though, would be a big win for those who favor more concise names for stations around the system: the board is expected today to recommend changing the name of the U Street/African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo station to simply U Street/Cardozo.

The U Street shortening is but one of many recommendations in a presentation to be delivered to the board today (read the slides below). The presentation suggests a 19-character cap on all stations, as well as a 13-character cap on transfer stations, and also recommends that WMATA not sell naming rights to stations, as has been proposed in the past.
