Walter Reed Army Medical Center lowered its flags today. In its 102 years at its location along Georgia Avenue, the campus has served countless numbers of veterans.

But between all the official ceremonies, editorials arguing we should not define it through recent scandal, memories (many emotional) of those who have worked and been treated there, tours of the new facility in Bethesda, and concerns about the future of its immediate neighbors, we thought it might be fun to highlight this historical photograph of the main medical center — taken circa 1909, shortly after it opened.

The Army will officially let go of the property on September 15, when the campus will transferred to the District of Columbia and the State Department.

Walter Reed, as a more than a century-old place that served generations of Americans, certainly has a fascinating history — if you’d like to read more, the Walter Reed Society is a good leaping point.
