There’s quite a few words, many of them fiery, being uttered about the National Mall these days. What better time, then, to dive into some historical maps which document the space — one of our favorites being the map above (check out a zoomable, high-res version here), uploaded by the Big Map Blog, who has an extensive cache of historic D.C. maps which can keep you occupied for some time.
It’s interesting to see the concept of Washington having a continuous green space running right across its belly — and without the “calcified government monopoly” of Tourmobile getting in the way, to boot.
