Photo by maxedaperture. If you’re the holder of one (or several) of the thousands of unpaid parking tickets issued by the District of Columbia before January 1, 2010, you can pay it (or them) without any late fees starting today.
It’s the first time the city has offered such an amnesty program in a decade. The District is owed approximately $245 million in fees from drivers assessed parking tickets, citations for moving violations and photo-enforcement tickets, and a fine on a citation is regularly doubled if it was not paid within 30 days. Tickets issued before January 1, 2010 will have that extra fee waived, though those participating in the amnesty will not be able to contest citations.
Those interested in participating in the program should check out the DMV’s frequently asked questions page for more information before paying online. If you think you might have an old ticket, but aren’t sure, you can request a list of amnesty-eligible tickets from the DMV by filling out this form.
