UPDATE: Friendship Heights has reopened, though trains are still single tracking through the station. At approximately 4 p.m. an adult male was hit by a train. The man was eventually removed at 4:49 p.m. after being stuck underneath one of the cars. WMATA has established bus shuttles between Bethesda and Van Ness-UDC. It is still unclear how the man ended up on the tracks or what his status is, though he was reportedly alive and conscious after being pulled from the tracks.

Metrorail trains along the Red Line are currently single-tracking between Medical Center and Van Ness-UDC after a person was struck on the tracks at the Friendship Heights station. It’s unclear at the moment whether the person is alive or not, but D.C. Fire and EMS have responded to the scene.

As of 4:30, WMATA trains were not stopping at Friendship Heights. The person who was struck is apparently trapped underneath a train. We’d advise avoiding the Red Line heading in the direction of Shady Grove for a little while, if possible.

We’ll obviously provide more information when it becomes available — but for the time being, those who use the Red Line to get home may want to schedule in a little extra time for the ride home.
