There was a serious traffic backup at the intersection of New York and Florida Avenues in the District this morning — though this was hardly normal rush hour gridlock.

At 5:15 a.m. a motorcyclist hit a tractor trailer along Florida Avenue near Eckington Place NE. The collision killed the cyclist. The ensuing investigation and lane closures due to that fatal accident lasted for so long, though, that a woman who was stuck in the traffic clog went into labor and delivered her baby right there, in Dave Thomas Circle. Both mother and baby are doing fine.
