Photo by pnzr242.The group identifying with the Occupy movement which has set up shop in and around McPherson Square for the last four days are planning a temporary move tonight — they’ll be protesting in front of the Koch Industries headquarters at 600 14th Street NW around 5:30 p.m. The protest comes in response to this recent Bloomberg expose. We’re guessing the effect on traffic will be minimal — the Huffington Post reports that “20 or 30 people” will be showing up at Koch to demonstrate.
Aside from momentary logistical notices, however, the real question seems to be how long the people who are demonstrating under the Occupy banner here in the District will hold out. While Occupy protests in other cities around the country appear to be picking up momentum, the Washington branch of the movement seems, well, slightly less robust. And based on everything we’re reading, the McPherson gathering could come to an end today. There’s a general assembly scheduled in the park after the Koch demonstration, during which the group will decide to merge with an upcoming “Stop the Machine” protest, keep up with smaller demonstrations (for example, protesting several politicians’ appearance at the Newseum tomorrow), or disband.
Given the combustible nature of protest, though, anything could happen. (And hey, at least the D.C. version of Occupy appears to actually have some semblance of direction.) It’s not like the Metropolitan Police Department is taking any chances.
