Join the parking revolution, people — everyone is paying by phone these days.

Well, not everyone, but lots of people. WTOP reports that roughly 100,000 people have signed up to use the District’s new pay-by-phone parking program, which is being run by Parkmobile.

Instead of using quarters or a credit card, an app allows drivers to pay for on-street parking with a few clicks of a button — and they even get a text message telling them when they’re almost out of time. The app can be used at the city’s 17,000 metered spots. (The convenience isn’t free, though — each use of the app costs 32 cents, which goes to Parkmobile.) According to Parkmobile, one in five parking transaction is now completed using a phone app.

It’s truly a brave new world out there when it comes to parking. Last week, the D.C. Department of Public Works said that it would be taking and uploading photographs of certain violations, allowing drivers to see evidence of their misguided ways.
