Statuary Hall in the U.S. CapitolAchieving statehood would obviously take a while, but how long should it take D.C. to get a single statue in Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol? Just as long, as it seems.
D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton announced today that Rep. Daniel Lungren (R-CA) introduced legislation this week that would get the District and U.S. territories one statue each in the Capitol, less than what Norton has always fought for but more than what we have now — none.
Each of the 50 states gets two statues in Statuary Hall; a few years ago, the District produced two of its own in anticipation of being able to get them in. Currently, our statues of Frederick Douglass and Pierre L’Enfant stand in the lobby of the Judiciary Square D.C. government building.
