Who needs Animal Cops? The District’s police and the Washington Humane Society are kicking plenty of tail without the reality TV cameras.

The WHS announced today that two D.C. individuals have been charged in two separate incidents involving animal fighting. The first involves Mario Romero Barillas, who was arrested late last year for keeping roosters in his residence on the 1600 block of Montello Street NE ; the roosters had sharpened spurs, a telltale sign of a cockfighting operation. Barillas is expected to serve five years in jail before being deported to Guatemala. The other man, Dervaughn Turner, was indicted in September after police found three dogs at his home on the 4500 block of Clay Street NE; the dogs had suffered severe injuries requiring “thousands of dollars’ worth of treatment by veterinarians.”

The incidents were indicative of the “most egregious forms of organized animal cruelty,” according to WHS Vice President Scott Giacoppo.

The Humane Society operates an animal cruelty tip line; and of course, there’s always a lot of animals who come from such situations that are in desperate need of a loving home.
