The D.C. time and weather hotline — which, to our surprise, a whole bunch of city residents still cared deeply about despite the advent of the Internet — has finally bit the dust.

Those calling the hotline this morning heard not the voices of the familiar weather forecaster which usually manned the hotline, but the sound of “we’re sorry, your call cannot be completed as dialed.” Verizon, which operated the service, had been threatening to pull the plug on the service since March, though it was briefly granted a stay of execution this summer.

That said, those of you who still prefer to call someone to be told the weather will be happy to know that there is an alternative. John Kelly, who has been all over this story from the start, reported this morning that dialing 202-589-1212 will connect you to a similar service operated by private contractor Telecompute that still features the likes of Rob Lucchese, Neal Pizzano, Howard Phoebus and others letting you know that it’ll be partly cloudy and gusty today, with a highs in the mid-60s.
