Good morning, Washington. Many of the District’s elected officials often dream of bringing the Washington Redskins back to the city, but that hope seems to have been downsized as of recent — they’ll settle for a training facility instead. The Washington Times writes that Mayor Gray and two members of the D.C. Council flew down to Florida late last week to see the training facility used by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, one which they’d like to replicate on the land in Southeast now occupied by the old D.C. General Hospital and RFK parking lots. Of course, details are slim thus far, and any such move would likely face resistance from frustrated D.C. United fans and fiscal hawks who won’t want a dime of public money going to the project.
Avoid Driving Through Georgetown Today: That’s usually pretty solid advice, but today more than ever before — President Obama’s speech at the Georgetown Waterfront Park will likely muck up some traffic during the day, reports WTOP.
The Gipper Arrives at National: Over a decade since National Airport was renamed after President Ronald Reagan, officials unveiled a nine-foot statue of the 40th president outside the original A terminal yesterday, writes The Washington Times. During his tenure, Reagan was credited with wrestling control of the airport from the federal government and handing it to Northern Virginia, but he also fired thousands of unionized air traffic controllers in 1981 when they went on strike.
Halloween Shooting Not Part of a Pattern: The Post reports today that the five shootings that took place throughout the District on Halloween were not part of a pattern. Additionally, the Georgetown shooting was likely just the product of two groups of teenagers from Southeast Washington running into each other. While the Georgetown Dish erroneously reported that the 17-year-old victim of that shooting had died, police said he remained in critical condition.
Briefly Noted: When the full Intercounty Connected opens on November 22, it’s expected to be plenty busy … Appeals for fired D.C. teachers proceeding slowly … A 24-hour vigil is allowed at McPherson Square, but camping is not … Region gets $268 million from Department of Defense to ease congestion.
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010, the District’s general election didn’t produce too many surprises (though it did a lot of Adrian Fenty write-in votes) and there was plenty to hate about Love. In 2009, a same-sex marriage hearing led to a same-sex proposal and President Obama proved that he hates Halloween.
