Just like kids demand the hottest new toy, it’s often difficult to stop D.C.’s elected officials from dreaming (or deluding themselves) of the day when the city gets the ‘Skins back. Whether a training facility or a brand new stadium, it doesn’t matter—they want football back in D.C.
The far-fetched hope again reared its ugly head yesterday, when NBC 4’s Tom Sherwood reported that some D.C. officials are thinking of an ambitious swap: D.C. would back Prince George’s County’s desire for a new FBI campus if county officials agreed to let Dan Snyder and the ‘Skins break their lease at FedEx Field and move back to the city. Though no city official would speak on the record, Sherwood did get ‘Skins fanboy Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) to offer his thoughts:
“Certainly the idea of a switch for the FBI moving to Prince George’s County and the Redskins moving back to the city in a brand new stadium at RFK would be something I would certainly be interested in,” he said.
There’s a problem, though: D.C. doesn’t exactly have a say in where the FBI will end up, much less does it have an FBI building to trade. Moreover, as the Post’s Mike DeBonis reported, Evans is also angling to keep the FBI in D.C., so it’s questionable that he would even have anything to trade with Prince George’s County, which itself could win the new FBI campus without such a swap.
On top of all of that, many residents around RFK Stadium have said that they’re not too keen on seeing another stadium go up on the land. The last time city officials floated something along these lines, it was for a ‘Skins training facility—and residents stressed that they had little interest in seeing long-awaited development plans for the area derailed by such a facility. (Since then, Snyder has gotten subsidies from both Ashburn and Richmond for training facilities at those respective sites.)
Of course, it’s unclear who exactly is seriously entertaining this idea. Senior Gray officiails told DeBonis that they had no interest in “fueling this stupidity,” and even Evans refused to name city officials that might be on board.
We get it: RGIII is awesome, and everyone wants to relive the glory days when the ‘Skins won a Super Bowl at RFK. But short of Snyder offering to build on his dime and give every resident free tickets, the dream of getting the team back is most likely dead.
