Despite avoiding the fate of many of their counterparts across the country, Occupy D.C. protesters expressed solidarity with their evicted brethren last night with a raucous march through downtown D.C. which included a brief storming of a private building.
After making their way to 9th Street NW with eight police cars escorting them through rush hour traffic, close to half of the 200-plus protesters worked their way into a building owned by Brookfield Properties, the owner of New York’s Zuccotti Park, from which Occupy Wall Street protesters were forcefully evicted yesterday.
After a 10-minute demonstration in the building’s lobby, the protesters continued on their way, marching through the heart of Chinatown and on to the office of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which has admitted to organizing calls between mayors on how to handle their respective Occupy encampments.
During the march, protesters alternated between a number of chants, including “This is what democracy looks like!” and “Occupy D.C., occupy Wall Street, occupy everywhere and never give it back!” Legal observers and media tailed the protesters as police cleared a winding path for them through the city, while members of the movement encouraged each other to remain peaceful and orderly.
Roughly 90 minutes after it started, the protesters had returned in McPherson Square.
