Photo by Chris DiGiamo. The intersection of 14th and R Streets NW is usually crowded at the 5 p.m. hour, but it can normally be chalked up to the foot traffic of people making their way to happy hour or back home from work, and not because of a daytime shooting. The latter was the case yesterday, though, after a man was shot and wounded along the 1400 block of R Street as daylight waned.
Police have so far been cagey about details, but we do know that the man who was shot remained alive and conscious and was transported to a local hospital. The suspect in the shooting has only been described as a 30-year-old man wearing a white T-shirt.
The block where the shooting took place has been in the news because of violence in the past — in 2010, Amanda Hess wrote about the occasionally violent coming together of the gentrification radiating out from Logan Circle and the collection of public housing complexes on the block where the shooting took place.
““If there’s a report of a robbery, assault, anything of that nature in the area, the first place that officers will go is the 1400 block of R Street…If I’m off-duty and walking by myself, I would walk five blocks out of my way to avoid that block,” a police officer told Hess in that article.
