UPDATE (4:30 p.m.): The AP reports now that the accused is a man, but that the U.S. Attorney’s office is not planning on filing charges against him at this time.
There are not a whole lot of details at the moment, but both the Associated Press and the Washington Examiner are reporting that a person has been removed from the Occupy DC encampment at McPherson Square after being accused of sexual assault and theft.
“Yesterday evening an individual living in McPherson Square accused another individual of sexual assault and theft,” reads a statement released by the Occupy D.C. media team this morning. “The accused was detained by United States Park Police and was immediately removed from the square by officials.”
“Occupy DC is a peaceful, nonviolent movement that denounces theft and all forms of assault, including sexual assault, and while we recognize that individuals have different motivations for being at McPherson Square, we strive to maintain a safe space for all,” the statement added.
The arrested person’s identity has not yet been released by the Park Police. Obviously, we’ll be keeping an eye on this story as it develops.
