Take notice, D.C. streetcar proponents — every transit project needs its own jingle.
The planners of Maryland’s planned Purple Line — the 16-mile light-rail network linking Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and offering east-west connections to the Red, Green and Orange lines of the Metro — seem to have realized as much, recently rolling out this catchy two-minute informational video on the nascent transit project.
Much like the D.C. streetcar, the first segment of which should be operational next year, the Purple Line has generated significant economic expectations. Late last year, a Purple Line project manager said that he expected the network to generate $1.8 billion in revenue over 30 years, not to mention create 27,000 new jobs every year during that time frame.
Still, the Purple Line is still a ways away from reality — construction isn’t slated to begin until 2015, and the whole network won’t be ready until 2020. Last October the Federal Transit Administration gave Purple Line planners a green light, and last week Gov. Martin O’Malley pledged $69 million towards two years of engineering costs for the project, which is estimated to cost $2 billion.
Until it finally opens, we’ll just have to settle for the jingle. Take a listen:
