As we noted last November, while most bike racks around town are of the ordinary, inverted-U variety, D.C. features an impressive number of alternative designs for parking one’s bicycle. There’s a coffee cup-shaped stand outside Filter in Dupont Circle, rows of curly W’s outside Nationals Park and even a bike-shaped bike rack on Capitol Hill.
One of the drivers behind the creative efforts has been the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District, which in recent years has commissioned entries for oddball bike racks in the area between the Farragut North, Farragut West and Dupont Circle Metrorail stations. Winning entries have included racks shaped like a stack of paperclips as well as the “bike here” sculpture seen above.
Yesterday, the BID announced the latest round of its design competition, with entries due by March 2. The winning designer gets $1,500; moreover the downtown area gets another curious device for cyclists parking their rides.
