Over the summer, the Downtown Business Improvement District partnered with the District Department of Transportation to create plans to install more bike racks around the downtown D.C. area. The plan, which aims to “double the number of bike racks in Downtown over the next three years,” kicked off this fall with the installation of 145 new bike racks between 6th and 11th streets NW.
Now, the next phase of the plan is beginning to get underway, as DowntownDC BID and DDOT plan to install “several” bike parking corrals around the area this spring. According to the DowntownDC BID, each corral “uses an area equivalent to one vehicle parking space to provide parking for up to ten bicycles.” DDOT says the corrals are an “effort to further reduce sidewalk crowding in areas with high bike parking demand.”
(We’re working on getting an exact number and locations.)
So far, the downtown area only has five in-street corrals. (The one I can think of is directly in front of Landmark’s E Street cinema at the corner of 11th and E streets NW, the rest are here.) It’s not yet clear how many corrals DDOT is planning to install.
Plans to install 175 new bike racks between 11th and 16th streets NW this summer are currently underway. Downtown DC BID says they’re planning to meet with property managers of buildings near the areas they want to install those bike racks.
