After a rash of robberies put residents and police in the District on high alert, everyone seemed to sigh a breath of relief last night when police announced that they had made two arrests. But then there were three more robberies this morning.

Last night the Metropolitan Police Department said that it had arrested 27-year-old Aaron Walker and 24-year-old Shadonna Fate in connection with three robberies earlier this week. Despite the seemingly good news, the Post is reporting this morning that police are still looking into whether the two are connected to other robberies, primarily those that have occurred in parts of Upper Northwest. (According to WAMU, two other people were arrested late last week in connection to robberies.) And despite the arrests, Fox 5 is reporting that three more armed robberies were reported this morning in Dupont Circle and downtown.

Last week, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier and Mayor Vince Gray warned of a dramatic uptick in robberies, primarily of cell phones and other electronic gadgets. MPD is offering $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of anyone involved in the robberies, and Lanier said she is working with the FCC and mobile service providers on a plan that would allow the providers to permanently disable phones once they are reported stolen.
