In December we reported that a velodrome — a banked oval-shaped cycling track — was coming to Southwest D.C. at some point in 2012. Today the Post confirms that it will be located in a parking lot on a nine-acre site at V Street SW at Buzzard Point. The land will be leased out by Akridge Development, which in a statement expressed its excitement with the plans.
“Locating DC’s first velodrome on Buzzard Point is an exciting contribution to the vitality of the neighborhood and the diversity of activities available to the city and the region – while still keeping the site readily available for permanent development,“ said Matt Klein, president of Akridge. “And our location near the water, which is increasingly surrounded by sports and recreational activities, is a perfect fit for a velodrome.”
With the location nailed down, the minds behind the D.C. velodrome are looking for the money to make it happen:
One major obstacle remains: money. DC Velodrome is launching a fundraising campaign with a goal of about $300,000, about a third of which is needed to assemble the track and the rest of which would afford free programming, with an opening date in late May or early June.
“I’m a firm believer in, you know, field of dreams. If you build it they will come,” Ponte said.
Once it opens, it will be the 27th velodrome in the U.S.; the closest velodrome to the District is just outside Allentown, Pennsylvania.
