The University of the District of Columbia may not be much of a competitor to many of the country’s state schools, but it’s certainly improving. And despite any qualms over academics or management, there’s one thing that’s not often debated — its location.
Tell that to Home Depot. As part of a grant program for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the home goods retailer is asking people to vote for their favorite school to receive funds for campus improvement projects. But on the list of schools, the District’s flagship public university is oddly located in…Maryland.

Howard University, even further removed from the D.C./Maryland line, is similarly listed as being in the Old Line State.
Maybe it was an honest mistake by someone who just assumed that since both UDC and Howard are in the part of the city that was handed over by Maryland 200 years ago for the creation of the nation’s capital (and would get retroceded back, if it ever comes to pass). Or maybe there’s simply no real justification for assuming that the University of the District of Columbia would be in Maryland. (Does this mean we now get voting rights?)
Either way, go the site and vote for your favorite local HBCU. UDC might be a lost cause; it only has 74 votes as of this writing. Howard is just over 9,000, putting it eighth in the running, but it’s still far behind first place Alabama A&M University, which has over 53,000 votes. It’s understandable we’re trailing such a powerhouse — I hear the Georgia campus is simply beautiful.
