A man was killed earlier this morning at the White Flint station after he jumped in front of an oncoming train in what appears to be the most recent suicide attempt on Metrorail, the transit system announced.

The decedent was struck by an outbound train about 10:15 a.m., according to Metro. The White Flint station was briefly closed while Metro authorities as well as Montgomery County Fire personnel began investigating. Red Line trains are currently running along a single track between the Grosvenor and Twinbrook stations, with every other train arriving at Grosvenor being turned around back toward Silver Spring or Glenmont.

The Examiner’s Kytja Weir notes this appears to be the fifth instance in 2012 of an individual committing suicide by being struck by an oncoming train. Earlier this month a man at the Foggy Bottom station died after jumping in front of an Orange Line train. That incident took place just as Metro’s board was scheduled to discuss suicide-prevention measures at its regular meeting.

Weir reports that Metro expects it will be 12:30 p.m. at the earliest when Red Line service is fully restored.

UPDATE, 12:36 p.m.: Single-track service between Grosvenor and Twinbrook has concluded, Metro says.
