It’s the first day of spring, the official start to the National Cherry Blossom Festival and yet another day of unseasonably warm temperatures in D.C. That can only mean one thing—more hordes of tourists descending upon the Tidal Basin to see the city’s famed cherry blossoms.

But just like many visitors to our fair city—and some residents—don’t know the basic rules that hold our society together (stand right, walk left!), yesterday we spied people picking cherry blossoms off of the trees and hanging off of branches. Needless to say, neither is allowed, a point that the National Park Service stresses to make with signs posted around the basin.

So if you see someone breaking either of these rules, kindly inform them that we’d all like those cherry blossom trees to remain beyond the 100 years that they’ve been there.
