I was surprised to learn that thundersnow was actually a thing. And now we’ve got graupel, which is somewhere between hail and snow. (And, I should add, demands to be said loudly in a German accent. “Is that hail? Nein, it’s GRAUPEL!”)
According to the Capital Weather Gang, there’s a 50/50 chance of rain and possibly the feared graupel pellets this evening. Tomorrow should be graupel-free, thankfully.
So don’t say we didn’t warn you—watch out for graupel!
Frozen pellets falling around DC probably graupel not hail.Graupel is supercooled water & snow flakes together
