Sand was delivered to the New York Avenue Beach Bar today. Photo by @NYAveBeachBarIf you can’t make it to the beach this weekend, the closest alternative might be a new beach-themed bar that’s opening along New York Avenue just east of Mt. Vernon Square this weekend.
The owners of the New York Avenue Beach Bar tweeted today that 70 tons of sand had been delivered this morning, a final step towards what Penn Quarter Insider says is a Friday opening. (Eater D.C. also reports that flip-flop-themed signage has gone up outside the bar.)
If you think this is just going to be some trashy, Jersey Shore-themed locale, think again—it’s owned by Tom Brown, the man behind The Passenger. According to the Post, he’s got some big ideas for the 5,500-square-foot locale:
[I]t won’t be all Jersey Shore on New York Avenue. Brown is in talks with a neighborhood restaurant about selling sandwiches from a yet-to-be-licensed food truck. He plans to have Saturday night luau-themed parties with roasted suckling pigs, Friday night crab feasts, and live beach music. There will be lockers where guests can check their shoes and work bags so they don’t need to carry them through the sand.
Just like the beach, though, the bar will close when it rains.
