Of all the things that could happen inside a car stuck in rush hour traffic, a passenger going into labor is probably the most inconvenient and nerve-wracking. But that’s exactly what happened at 6:41 p.m. yesterday in Arlington, WTOP reports.

A woman riding in the back of a sport utility vehicle stuck in evening rush gridlock on the 5300 block of Columbia Pike was in the middle of labor. Down the block, Arlington Police Corporal Steve Troyano was in the middle of a traffic stop when the driver of the SUV flagged him down.

You know that television trope where a woman goes into labor while riding in a tightly enclosed space like an elevator or car? That’s basically what happened next, WTOP reports:

Troyano contacted the mother-to-be and saw that the baby’s head was crowning and she was ready for delivery.

The 6 pound, 3 ounce baby girl was delivered at 6:41 p.m. with the umbilical cord around her neck.

After removing the cord from the baby’s neck and stimulation, she began coughing and was wrapped in a towel until the ambulance arrived.

Troyano, an 11-year veteran of the Arlington County Police Department, was an emergency medical technician before becoming a cop. But last night was the first time he delivered a baby

“I’m pretty sure this is going to be a story for my retirement party one day,” he told WTOP. Yeah, we think everyone’s pretty sure about that.
