As expected, a campaign aide to Mayor Vince Gray pleaded guilty today to lying to federal investigators about his role in a scheme to pay fringe mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown to stay in the 2010 race and attack Mayor Adrian Fenty. Brooks is the second aide this week to have pleaded guilty to a number of campaign finance violations, obstruction of justice and lying.

In court today, more details emerged of Brooks’ role in the scheme. According to the case against him, he gave Brown up to 10 money orders; Thomas Gore, who pleaded guilty earlier this week, gave Brown $660 in money orders. The money was meant to keep Brown on the attack against Fenty. Gore was caught lying after Brooks agreed to wear a wire while speaking to him. Brooks faces six months in prison.

Of course, the question is what comes next. According to WTOP’s Mark Segraves, today Brooks implicated an unnamed co-conspirator in the scheme. It remains to be seen who U.S. Attorney for D.C. Ron Machen might have in his sights next, but the obvious question remains—is Gray one of them?
