Mayor Vince Gray and a delegation of D.C. officials just returned from a retailers convention in Las Vegas, where they’ve gone to woo big-name national chains to set up shop in the city. What came of this year’s effort? More hope that Wegmans might finally break the suburban barrier and open in D.C., reports the Washington Business Journal:

“The meeting with Wegmans went well, and they’ve indicated that they have a strong interest in the District,” said Jose Sousa, spokesman for the city’s deputy mayor for planning and economic development, after the conference. “We’ll continue to apprise them of some great opportunities for a location for them here in the District.”

Two sites are being considered: the Walter Reed campus in NW and the St. Elizabeths campus in SE. Of course, if a deal came to pass, it would be a first for the popular supermarket. According to the Journal, most Wegmans locations are over 100,000 square feet in size, and urban formats haven’t yet been tried. But hey, if Walmart can do it, why can’t one—or six—Wegmans’?
