The Francis A. Gregory Library in Ward 7’s Hillcrest.
Last week we raved about the new Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library in Ward 7. It seems we weren’t the only ones who were attracted to it, though—last Tuesday, the library opened late after staff discovered that six computer monitors had been stolen from the new facility the night prior.
Today MPD put out a video showing five hooded men throwing a rock through a window in the rear of the library and carting off six of the monitors and damaging one more. All told, the monitors are worth just over $1,100.
This isn’t the first time that criminals have struck one of the city’s new libraries. In mid-March, a Mac was stolen from the Northwest One Library. (The Walker Jones School to which it is attached has seen numerous similar break-ins; as of last October, around 100 computers had been stolen in a year’s worth of break-ins.) Last summer, it was the Petworth Library that was the victim of thieves, who carted off six Macs.
