Two women on the bustling U Street NW corridor were shot early Saturday morning, with both suffering non-life-threatening injuries in the latest in what appears to be a spate of shooting incidents in which bystanders are bearing the brunt of the injuries.
The shooting, which happened about 1 a.m. Saturday, happened a week after two women were wounded when an altercation between two groups of men lead to gunfire.
In the most recent incident, one woman was shot in the chin, while the other was grazed in the neck, a police spokeswoman said. Both victims were transported to a nearby hospital.
Police do not have any leads on a suspect, though, and the Post reports that neither victim was able to give responding officers a description of the shooter. One of the victims is a White House producer for NBC News, according to WUSA’s Bruce Johnson.
The gun used in the shooting was a low-caliber weapon, Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) wrote to members of the U Street Yahoo! Group.
It is unclear if the two shootings are related, a police spokesman told the Post. But Graham told the Post that related or not, it appears recent gun violence in the U Street neighborhood has resulted with bystanders as the victims.
