The Perseid meteor shower is dazzling the August skies once again this weekend. Although these comet fragments have been lighting up the summer nights since July, the cosmic light show’s peak performance is expected to occur late tonight until pre-dawn tomorrow.
To get a good view of the Perseids, find an area with clear skies (away from city lights) facing the northeast direction. Below are other recommendations for this event from previous DCist posts:
Bring your reclining lawn chair, bug spray, and a pitcher of something to keep you cool, and keep looking up…Don’t use binoculars or a telescope, as it will narrow your field of vision too much. If you’ve got a camera, try breaking out the tripod and opening the shutter for some long exposures in the hopes of catching one (then put it into the DCist Flickr pool with the tags “astronomy” and “meteor” — we’ll certainly be perusing to see what you come up with). Happy hunting!
