This was a quiet change, but an inevitable one. With the gradual dismantling of TBD completed in June with the departure of transportation reporter John Hendel, the site lingered on, mostly as a repository for rehashed WJLA headlines, photo galleries by Joshua Yospyn and video clips of NewsTalk With Bruce DePuyt.
But no more. Pointing one’s web browser to TBD.com now automatically redirects to WJLA.com, bringing a bit more finality to Allbritton’s scuttled attempt at hyperlocal journalism that launched by plucking some of its competitors top editors to run the site, including the City Paper’s Erik Wemple and Andrew Beaujon and our former editor Sommer Mathis.
Fortunately, the demise of the TBD home page doesn’t mean the silent death of the content that TBD’s once-robust news team cranked out in the site’s vibrant first eight months and the 16 dreary months that followed. But it might take some creative searching to dig up pieces like Jenny Rogers’ oft-cited guide to D.C.’s Safeway supermarkets or Maura Judkis’ experience sitting as a model for the visual artist Victoria F. Gaitán.
Oddly, though, TBD’s Twitter account is still going today. While it hasn’t tweeted out anything other than a link to WJLA content for months, it’s still buzzing like some eerie, post-mortem twitch.
