Millions of people visit D.C. every year, and they spend plenty of money on memories of their time here. Some of those souvenirs are great, some less so. In this new periodic series, we look at a sampling of the things—good, bad and just plain strange—that visitors to our fair city can pick up to commemorate their travels. Feel free to send your submissions our way.
No visit to Washington, D.C. is complete without a stop at the U.S. Capitol. Whether you take a formal tour of heart of the country’s legislative process or merely wander the halls of the congressional office buildings, you might want to stop and pick up a little something to remember the place.
How about a congressional toothpick holder? The glass holder is elegantly accented by a metal seal of the U.S. House of Representatives; you could store your toothpicks the same way that your member of Congress does! This toothpick holder comes in three sizes—you know, for those oddly sized toothpicks you have lying around the house!
Let’s be real—this is a shot glass, plain and simple. We checked around, and it seems to be standard practice at family-friendly locales to pawn them off as toothpick holders. (Disney does so, for one.) It’s not fooling anyone, though, least of all the buyer who ends up using one to drown away their sorrows over how little Congress gets done these days.
