With 13 days until Election Day, the barrage of political advertisements flooding the local airwaves is only getting more intense. Our luck for having a swing state next door. But you might well recognize the gruff voice narrating a new spot targeting Virginia voters that debuts today.

“The last few years, America’s been knocked down,” the gravelly voice begins. Yep, it’s Clint Eastwood, last seen at the Republican National Convention berating an empty chair. “Obama’s second term would be a rerun of the first and our country just couldn’t survive that,” the actor and director continues.

Eastwood’s narration plays over stock footage of campaign boilerplates like shuttered factories, commercial shipping in China, and President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

“We need someone who can turn it around fast, and that man is Mitt Romney,” Eastwood says. “There’s not much time left and the future of our country is at stake.” So, basically what Eastwood is saying is that re-electing Obama would lead to a disaster on par with Leonardo DeCaprio’s and Armie Hammer’s makeup in J. Edgar

The ad, titled “At Stake,” is the work of American Crossroads, a so-called “super” political action committee formed by former George W. Bush consigliere Karl Rove. Combined with its partner organization, Crossroads GPS, the group is planning on spending up to $70 million on the 2012 presidential election. For this week alone, American Crossroads is spending $401,400 on NBC4, $275,100 on WJLA, and $222,100 on WUSA.

The Eastwood ad going up today is part of a $12.6 million buy that includes two other spots. In addition to Virginia, Eastwood’s clip will also be seen on stations in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and Ohio.

And in case you’re wondering, there are no chairs in the ad.
