See what’s going on in the picture above? Drivers—greedy, unthinking drivers—are still parking on the left-hand side of L Street NW, even though that part of the road between New Hampshire Avenue and 12th Street is currently getting turned into a bike lane.
Parking one’s vehicle in a bike lane earns a $65 ticket, according to D.C. law. The parking spaces on the north side of L Street were the first to go when work began last month on the new bike lane. The signage for the new bike isn’t yet complete, says District Department of Transportation spokesman John Lisle, but he assures DCist that parking in bike lanes is never allowed.
In fact, there could be some bike-friendly re-education in order. “Bottom line is there is going to be an adjustment period and we will be doing more to educate drivers and riders about the new traffic pattern,” Lisle says.
In the mean time, don’t park in the bike lane, jerks.
