If only the entire D.C. government was as effective as its parking enforcement, huh? WJLA is reporting that D.C. wrote some 1.8 million parking tickets last year, an increase from the year prior:

The city is writing tickets at a record date, raking in nearly $90 million just last year.

The city wrote 1.8 million parking tickets in 2012, up 200,000 tickets from the year before. That’s nearly 6,000 parking tickets each day, or 400 tickets an hour and seven tickets each minute.

There may be even more tickets in the future, though—as part of his 2013 budget, Mayor Vince Gray put $450,000 towards improving the efficiency of parking and traffic citations.

In 2012, D.C.’s growing network of traffic cameras doled out a fair share of tickets too: red light cameras took credit for 94,541 tickets, while speed cameras claimed 707,523. Both numbers were up from fiscal 2011, especially speeding tickets, which doubled.

If you’re a D.C. resident, it behooves you to pay off any outstanding tickets—the city announced last week that it would start taking overdue fines out of tax refunds.
