In just a month and change, D.C. area residents with that gambling jones will no longer have to trek to West Virginia or Pennsylvania or New Jersey to get their blackjack and craps fix. Maryland Live!, the sprawling casino next to the Arundel Mills shopping mall in Hanover, Md. is set to add table games in early April.
The Washington Post reports that come April 11, Maryland Live!, which is currently a slots-only gambling hall, will introduce 122 tables featuring blackjack and its variants, craps, pai gow, and other card and dice games. The new games were made possible thanks to a ballot referendum last year in which Maryland voters chose to allow table games in the five existing casinos throughout the state, of which Maryland Live! is the largest. (The same initiative also authorized the construction of a sixth casino and resort, which will be located at the National Harbor complex in Oxon Hill.)
But not every card shark is likely to be satisfied when the table games start up. Poker enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer. The Post reports the casino is still building a split-level poker room, which won’t open until the summer.
In the mean time, get the blackjack book, read it thoroughly, and always remember to split aces and eights. And for heaven’s sake, please don’t stand on a 16 when the dealer is showing seven or higher. It’s just bad manners.
