The Maryland Senate has given its approval to a bill that would ban smoking in vehicles when a child under the age of eight is present, reports WJLA:

The Senate passed the measure on a 27-20 vote on Wednesday.

Drivers also wouldn’t be able to allow other passengers to smoke in a vehicle with a child under eight.

A person in violation would be subject to a maximum fine of $50.

The bill now moves to the House of Delegates, where it is likely to face more resistance. This same bill was debated last year, but quietly died.

In January, a Virginia Senate committee similarly approved a bill banning smoking in cars when kids are present, but it later failed to get the necessary votes to become law.
