Oh, those sometimes woeful Washington Nationals. Maybe it was the Icarian pre-season projections that have made this two-month-old season so frustrating. For every game or two the Nationals win, they just as easily let one slip away. Leads are surrendered, the bullpen falters, and the bats go anemic.

Well, that last thing hasn’t been happening as much lately. After an early-season stint on the disabled list, third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has been carrying the Nationals’ lineup, which is currently without the services of Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper. And he put on an impressive display last night during the Nationals’ visit to the Baltimore Orioles, belting home runs in his first three at bats.

Outfielder Roger Bernadina, a bench player filling in at right field for Werth, also joined the power show. In the fourth inning, Bernadina blasted an arcing home run out of Camden Yards that landed somewhere on Eutaw Street.

But in his next at bat, in the fifth inning, Bernadina hit it somewhere else. Baseball players foul pitches off their bodies all the time, but usually into their feet or lower legs. Not so for Bernadina, nicknamed the “Shark,” whose foul tip landed exactly where you don’t want it to land.

Some of Bernadina’s teammates chuckled from the dugout, but the hilarity was fleeting. The moment turned out to be an extended metaphor. The Nationals failed to plate any runs after the fifth inning, and their 6-2 lead soon devolved into a 9-6 deficit.
