An Arlington deputy sheriff has been charged with the murder of an Alexandria man he allegedly shot while off duty.
Craig Patterson, 44, was arrested Thursday afternoon after the commonwealth’s attorney issued an arrest warrant, according to Alexandria Police. He was then charged with murder. No further information about the arrest was provided by police.
According to NBC4, Patterson appeared in court Friday morning and was also charged with use of a firearm in committing a felony.
Patterson was questioned after the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Julian Dawkins on May 22. Alexandria Police have not released any information about the events that led to the shooting that night. But a witness told the Post she heard Dawkins arguing with another man, whom he eventually chased down a street. The man then reportedly told Dawkins, a shuttle bus driver for the PBS NewsHour, “I’ll be back. You best believe I’ll be back.”
Dawkins’ death was ruled a homicide two days later, but Patterson was not arrested or charged. Family and their friends of Dawkins gathered outside the Alexandria court house earlier this week, calling for Patterson, a 17-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, to be charged.
