The Washington Humane Society has released its annual “State of the Animals” report from its last fiscal year, and the data is hopeful.
Over 2,500 pets were placed into permanent homes between October 2011 and September 2012, with cats and kittens accounting for 50 percent of animals adopted. This is a 12.5 percent increase from its last fiscal year.
The WHS, which recently had one of its kitten’s stolen then returned, said its humane law enforcement officers responded to nearly 1,400 calls to either seize pets in need of help or provide assistance to the owner. Its wildlife division responded to over 13,000 calls.
The news wasn’t all positive, as the WHS reports its shelters are filled beyond capacity and its medical services team is in need of funds. Adoptable pets from its New York Avenue shelter and Georgia Avenue shelter can be seen here.
