Paul Mannina, the U.S. Labor Department attorney who was arrested last week on charges that he broke into a co-worker’s home and sexually assaulted her, was found dead today in his cell at D.C. jail with his throat cut open. The Washington Post reports Mannina, 58, was found unresponsive by guards about 3:43 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.
Mannina, the Post reports, shared the cell with another inmate, and it is still unknown whether the fatal wound was self-inflicted. His death came the morning after a preliminary hearing in D.C. Superior Court, in which detectives alleged that Mannina broke into the victim’s home in the Forest Hills home the night of June 5, handcuffed her, and sexually assaulted her to the point where she required facial reconstruction surgery.
Mannina was arrested last Wednesday and charged with first-degree burglary and third-degree assault.
