Conservative firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) said in a letter to Mayor Muriel Bowser that Jan. 6 detainees at the D.C. Jail are suffering “despair, hopelessness, and a severe abuse of justice.”

It was a moment with striking parallels to the present: Now, in 2022, the District’s jail is once again under a wave of public scrutiny and city officials are discussing the need for a replacement.

This is the second corrections officer to be arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into the D.C. Jail this year.

Treyvon Littles died at the D.C. Jail earlier this month, and officials can’t explain why. His mother says she’s prepared to file a lawsuit.

At least one of the deaths has been possibly linked to an opioid overdose, according to a spokesperson for the D.C. Department of Corrections.

The officer has been charged with two federal offenses: bribery and providing or possessing contraband in prison.

Tom Faust, who led the D.C. Department of Corrections from 2011 to 2016, will again take the job at the end of the month.

D.C. corrections officials have promised a “top to bottom” examination of operations at the jail.
