The Capitol Hill and greater Washington community made good on its promise to support Frager’s after a fire devastated the historic hardware store in early June.

Over $130,000 has been donated to a fund set up by the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, Hill Rag and The Hill Is Home report.

Nicky Cymrot, the community group’s president, told Hill Rag that 50 Frager’s employees have received funds so far and “that all the tenant businesses located above the Frager’s Paint Store have been contacted to determine their needs.”

“Several of those small businesses have requested help on behalf of their employees and received it; others are still considering what those needs might be,” Cymrot told Hill Rag.

The Capitol Hill Community Foundation is still raising money for the fund.

In the hours just after the fire, Julia Robey Christian, chief operating officer of the Anacostia Playhouse, set up a Give Forward campaign for Frager’s and raised over $30,000. On the site, Christian said she shut down the campaign at the request of the Capitol Hill Community Foundation and directed potential donors to their fund. Request for comment from Christian as to what happened to the money she raised has not been returned. Christian said “the check was sent directly to [Frager’s owner] John Weintraub a few weeks ago and I believe his plan was to add it to the CHCF pot.”

In the meantime, Frager’s is operating a garden center seven days a week at Eastern Market. The store is selling plants, soil and pottery, and is even making keys again.
