Architect of the Capitol, the federal agency that provides information about the historic Washington building, has released a “visual timeline” showing 200 years of growth around the National Mall in just three minutes.
Beginning with the Capitol building, the video uses animation to show the construction of some of D.C.’s most well-known structures while a timeline provides historical context. Fans of HBO’s TV adaptation of Game of Thrones will quickly note how similar the video’s style is to the show’s opening credits, as Urban Turf did. (It’s already been detailed how D.C. politics is like George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, in part, by DCist’s own Benjamin R. Freed.) That’s why this DCist reporter recommends turning on the theme song while enjoying the video.
Update: Some wonderful person has combined the “visual timeline” video with the “Game of Thrones” theme. Enjoy.
Here’s the “visual timeline” without music.
