D.C. is the least honest place in America, according to Honest Tea. And they have an anecdote to back it up.

The test of integrity was conducted by leaving Honest Teas out at an unmanned kiosk and requesting $1 per bottle using the honor system. Out of 50 states and one should-be state, D.C. came in dead last, with just 80 percent of participants paying for the drink.

The shaming does not end there. In a press release, co-founder Seth Goldman said his bike was stolen on the day he conducted the honesty experiment in D.C.

“Even though my bicycle was stolen the same day as our D.C. experiment, it’s reassuring to know that 92 percent of Americans will do the right thing even when it seems no one is watching,” Goldman said in a release, further besmirching our fair city.

But not so fast. As Goldman clarified to WTOP, his bike was locked up at the Bethesda Metro station, which, just to be clear, is located in Maryland. That state came in near the bottom, with 89 percent of people paying for their tea.

Nice try, Honest tea. But if you’re going to point out how dishonest D.C. is, at least use some events that actually happened here.
