Following a hearing with the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board on Friday afternoon, it seems as though a compromise has been reached that could see The Reef back open soon.

After a scuffle between a security guard and two patrons ended in a stabbing last weekend, the popular Adams Morgan bar was closed indefinitely, with its liquor license also suspended. The hearing on Friday resulted in a compromise between the ABCB and The Reef that mostly deals with a beefed up training plan for security personnel at the bar, as well as increased security measures to ensure this kind of incident doesn’t happen again.

Among the conditions listed in the official court summary, The Reef will need to:

  • Conduct a variety of new training measures for all security employees prior to reopening.
  • Properly document all training and employment status of security employees.
  • Conduct a criminal background check on all current and future employees.
  • Use devices to detect false ID’s.
  • File a detailed security plan that includes plans for a number of security cameras, and procedures for preventing and handling incidents like this in the future.
  • The compromise also states that The Reef is to submit this detailed security plan summary no later than 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 20. Quite the quick turnaround. After this, a hearing will be held on August 22 to determine the fate of The Reef, unless the Board is satisfied with The Reef’s security plans.

A request for comment from The Reef’s management has not yet been returned.
