Terrible news for the morning commute: The Red Line is shut down between the Fort Totten and NoMa-Gallaudet stations after a Metro train that wasn’t carrying passengers derailed around midnight between the Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland stations.
Metro is asking riders to use the Green Line between Fort Totten and Gallery Place to get downtown. There will also be “limited” shuttle service between the Fort Totten, Brookland, Rhode Island Ave and NoMa-Gallaudet stations. “Passengers using shuttle bus service should expect significantly longer travel times,” Metro advises.
The derailment “caused damage to track equipment in the area of Rhode Island Station, including the third rail, signal cables and track components,” so Red Liners should expect repair work to take quite awhile. Indeed, there’s no estimate for service restoration.
