Two days after the D.C. Council voted to uphold Mayor Vincent Gray’s veto of the so-called “living wage” bill, Wal-Mart has announced that it will open two hiring centers next week.

The big box chain will open hiring centers for the stores at 99 H Street NW and 5968 Georgia Avenue NW on Monday at 900 2nd Street NE and 7818 Eastern Avenue NW. Applications will also be accepted online.

“We expect that these D.C. openings will include all the same elements we regularly see in other parts of the country: community stakeholders welcoming a new business; public officials celebrating economic development; customers saving money and; associates taking advantage of a job with real opportunity,” Wal-Mart spokesperson Steven Restivo said in an email to reporters.

Restivo said Wal-Mart hopes to have the two stores opened by the end of the year, while four others are in the works.

Gray vetoed the Large Retailer Accountability Act in mid-September, calling it a “job killer,” as well as “woefully inadequate and flawed.” Several Councilmembers have since introduced living wage or minimum wage bills aimed at all employers, rather than just large retailers like Wal-Mart.
